When Helping Paws puppies are very small, their dew claws are removed. Oh how I wish that had been done for Cody.
In a mad dash to beat Belle to the ball, he slipped on the dewy grass and ripped his one dew claw. Most dogs are born with two front dew claws - the dog version of the opposable thumb. Some dogs are also born with two back dew claws. Cody was born with 1 1/2 dew claws - he has just the digit on his right paw. The left dew was also deformed, but with a nail that curved outward. It was only a matter of time before he injured the claw in one fashion or another. Still, this injury was nasty. In concern for the squeamish, I won't provide further description. Suffice it to say amputation of the injured dew just needed completion.
Cap'n Cody Bumphead is now Cap'n Cody Conehead. For two weeks. We may be amputees as well by the time he's heeled.

Aw, poor Cap'n Cody! There is nothing more humiliating than being a conehead. Get better soon, Cody!
Ouch! Poor dog. He clearly is not thrilled by any of it. But don't you love those blue bandages? I think they're very cool.
My friends dog has ripped all four of her dew claws at some point in the last ten years.
The poor pupper!
Aww - poor guy!!
We just got two puppies and the female has two dew claws on her back paws. I think when she's neutered I'll have them removed. I wouldn't have thought to have them removed until now. Speedy recovery Cody!
