Handy Dandy Leashes

Back when Belle was a little pup we didn't use the gentle leader. She would drag us on walks choking herself the entire way. As we slowly acclimated her to the gentle leader, I had no idea what a difference it would make when she was finally ready to wear it for walks. The transformation was nothing short of astonishing. The pulling stopped instantly.

Fast forward many months and we're learning another leash technique. Walking with a flexi-lead, a retractable leash that can lengthen or shorten with the push of a button. Our homework this week has been to get the dog used to leash. Let the dog drag it so they get used to the sound the spool makes if it's accidently dropped or pops off its' position on a wheelchair.

Like the gentle leader, I had no idea what a difference this type of leash would mean - not just for Belle, but for me. I've been struggling all winter with pain and swelling in my hands. The regular leash has been a trial at times to hold on to - particularly if Belle lunges in any way. The flexi-leash with its convenient handle has eliminated that issue - and made it far easier to treat Belle when we're practicing loose leash walking.

Handy, to say the least!
